Much like DC, Marvel was in the average range this week, and ended up a bit below their March total. On April 20, 2011, Marvel put out 18 new comics with 138 credited creators, 126 men and 12 women. The percentages look like so:
An 8.7% isn’t anything to write home about, but their number fits in the pie slice at least and its spot on for their January and February averages. It’s a small step up from last week, and hopefully the improvement continues and they can finish the month strong. There’s not much to say about an average overall total… it’s kind of dull, so let’s look at the categories:
And put them in a chart:
Broken down, it was a weird week at Marvel. A 10.5% for writers is SUPER good, and I’m enthused about that. Cover artists at 13.3% is also pretty awesome. Everything else, however, sort of sucks… pencillers weren’t disastrously low, but no inkers isn’t good and a 4.8% for colourists is unusually tiny. No letterers is a given at Marvel, really, but the editorial scene was bizarre. Editors were a little below average this week, but assistant editors were CRAZY low. They’re usually in the thirties at Marvel, so this is a huge dip. They’re lucky that they had a couple high totals elsewhere, because editorial always carries a lot of the load… without cover artists and writers stepping it up, this week could have been a disaster. As is, it was only a little bit bad.
Notes:
- Skaar: King of the Savage Land is one of my favourite comic titles right now. I have no idea what the book is about or who Skaar is, but I quite like the title.
- The busiest books of the week actually weren’t that busy… Silver Surfer #3 and X-Factor #218 both had 11 creators, with 0 and 2 women respectively.
- Percentagewise, the book with the most female creators was Wolverine & Jubilee #4 at 2 of 6. Numerically, Hulk #32, Wolverine #8, and X-Factor #218 all had two ladies as well.
