As explained in the previous post, things are all wonky this week… I hope to have the DC May 4th numbers up shortly. For now, we have the May 11th numbers, and they’re damn impressive!! On May 11, 2011, DC released 16 new comic books crediting 123 creators, 103 men and 20 women. Here is the record breaking pie chart:
Look at how big that slice is!! DC’s 16.3% blows their old record out of the water. I don’t have last week’s numbers finalized yet, but they’re looking above average as well, so DC is off to a very strong start in May. Broken down, however, the numbers look like the same old DC:
And in chart form:
Editorial KILLED it this week… the assistant editors coming in at 50% is massive, and the 35.3% from the editors is huge as well. There were a lot of Bat-books out this week, and they tend to have female editors all over the place, so that really contributed to these totals. The rest of the numbers are average, if not slightly below. This record breaking 16.3% was built solely on the backs of the editorial staff. Having a writer AND an inker is nice, but these are hardly mind-blowing percentages. No pencillers or letterers were no help, and colourists were way below average. Only cover artists had a high total, and even then it wasn’t particularly crazy. So hooray DC editorial!! You deserve all the credit for this new record.
Notes:
- DC’s big summer event, Flashpoint #1 came out this week, and I thought it was only okay… it’s got a lot of potential to get cool, but getting me interested in such different versions of all the characters is going to take some work I think. I’m jazzed for Wonder Woman and the Furies though. Also, in a rarity for a Geoff Johns-penned book, there was a lady in the credits!! Sandra Hope is inking the book, and doing a great job of it.
- The busiest book of the week was Superman #711 with 11 creators, none of them women. There’re never any gals on Superman.
- Birds of Prey #12 came out this week, so it was of course the book with the most female creators by number and percentage at 4 of 6. There was an impressive three-way tie for second place though: Batgirl #21, Cinderella: Fables Are Forever #4, and Unwritten #25 were all 2 of 7.
