Women In Comics: Marvel, May 4, 2011

Sorry for the delay with the May 4th numbers… I’m still missing one DC book (damn you, Looney Tunes #198!!!) so I’m going to put up the Marvel numbers and the next week’s DC numbers as I’ve got all of those.  Hopefully this week’s DC numbers will be up along with the next week’s Marvel numbers in a day or two, and everything will be back on its normal track next week!!  On to Marvel… on May 4, 2011, Marvel put out 19 books with 168 credited creators, 156 men and 12 women.  Let’s go to the pie chart:

I really need to stop getting excited about Marvel’s numbers… every time it looks like they’ve really turned a corner, the next week they drop like a stone.  I think they just might be screwing with me.  On a monthly basis they’ve been getting a little bit better every time, but they are capable of some BAD weeks.  This is one of them… 7.1% is pretty terrible.  Here are the numbers broken down:

And charted up:

Assistant editors did really well, and tried to pull up the overall percentage as much as they could, but everything else was pretty lackluster this week.  Editors were barely in the double digits while colourists didn’t even get that high, and there were zeroes from pencillers, inkers, and letterers.  We expect the letterers, but usually the artists bring in a few ladies.  One writer is certainly below average, and even the cover artists are lower than usual.  Given their recent monthly totals, I’m cautiously optimistic that Marvel will pick it up in the weeks to come, but these are some weak numbers.

Notes:

  • They’re really getting a lot out of this Marvel Zombie franchise… I thought they’d pretty much exhausted it after the first two minis, but they keep coming up with new ideas.  People love the zombies.
  • The busiest book of the week was Fear Itself: Home Front #2 with fifteen creators, two of them gals.
  • The book with the most female creators AND the highest percentage of female creators was Emma #3 at 3 of 4.  This book always wins when it comes out.  Wrong week!!  The best this week was their big summer event book Fear Itself #2 at 2 of 8, so that’s nice to see… Laura Martin is getting some high profile colouring gigs lately!!
