It was a good week at DC, in some respects. The overall total was certainly nice. On June 8, 2011, DC released 17 new comic books featuring 113 credited creators, 98 men and 15 women. Here are the percentages:
That’s a solid looking slice of pie… 13.3% is a nice overall total. Between Flashpoint titles and Green Lantern movie prequels, there were six out of the ordinary books this week, but it didn’t seem to hurt any. The six books were actually pretty bad themselves at a combined 2 for 38, but the rest of the line stepped it up for a really good total overall. The numbers break down like this:
And then chart up like so:
Here’s where it gets not so good. We’ve got three empty categories, and two of them are big ones. No pencillers or inkers always looks bad. That, combined with only one writer (Gail Simone, of course… while there were no new writers this week, ending that streak, DC’s been fairly consistent at having at least one female writer for a few weeks running now), is pretty weak. Cover artists were only okay, while colourists did well. Editorial was solid, as always, with a nice number for editors and a great number for assistant editors. But all together, despite the high overall total, this week feels like a poor showing to me.
Notes:
- I’m curious to see how well the Flashpoint tie-ins sell. Three issues isn’t too onerous an investment, but with the disappointing sales on the main book and the whole thing feeling like an inconsequential Elseworlds story, I’m not optimistic that the side books are going to do well.
- DC’s comics featured a surprisingly small number of creators this week. The busiest book was Batman and Robin #24 with only 9 creators (1 woman).
- Birds of Prey #13 came out this week, so it slaughtered everything else in terms of female creators at 4 of 7.
