Women In Comics Statistics: DC, June 15, 2011

While it wasn’t quite a record breaking week at DC, I would say that this is possibly the best week DC’s had all year.  On June 15, 2011, DC Comics put out 19 new books with 150 credited creators, 127 men and 23 women.  This is a big slice of pie:

The record is 16.3%, a full percentage point better than this week’s 15.3%, but this is still a great total.  DC’s been going higher and higher every week so far in June, so maybe next week we’ll see the record broken (though I doubt it… high totals tend to be followed by a pretty bad week to level things out).  By category, the numbers are really good:

And they continue to be good in chart form:

We’ve got really strong numbers in editorial, colourists hitting twenty percent, AND a letterer… that’s a damn fine week for the categories that don’t get your name on the cover.  But the solid numbers continue.  Cover artists are a bit below average, but we’ve got a bunch of ladies writing and drawing books… and new ones too!!  Writer Kelly Sue Deconnick started a three issue arc with Supergirl #65 while Karen Traviss penned Gears of War #17.  Marian Churchland pencilled and inked Northlanders #41, and Adriana Melo pencilled Superman/Batman #85.  That’s an impressive amount of female talent for DC, and it’s nice to see them do well overall AND by category for a change.

Notes:

  • There are women here and there on the Flashpoint titles, usually colouring or assistant editing a book.  Nei Ruffino and Kate Stewart, in particular, are getting a fair amount of work out of the Flashpoint books.
  • There was a three-way tie for busiest book of the week between DC Universe Online Legends #10, Superman/Batman #85, and Teen Titans #96.  They all had 10 creators, with 2, 1, and 2 female creators respectively.
  • It was a four-way tie for most female creators by percentage: Batgirl #22, Cinderella: Fables are Forever #5, Gears of War #17, and Hellblazer #280 were all 2 of 7.
