Women In Comics Statistics: DC, June 29, 2011

The fun continues… we’re back to DC, and the numbers are even worse than the previous week.  I’m listening to the Beach Boys now, though, so perhaps my mood will improve.  On June 29, 2011, DC Comics released 18 new comic books with 172 credited creators, 159 male and 13 female.  The percentages look like this:

It’s not the worst week DC’s ever had, but in the sevens two weeks in a row is pretty terrible.  Know what’s a really underappreciated Beach Boys song?  “Come Go With Me”.  It’s super catchy.  And that’s all I have to say about this 7.6%.  On to the categories:

And the chart:

Here’s the thing: Hooray there’s a female penciller and inker, BUT it was Jill Thompson drawing ONE page in Scalped #50.  It’s a lovely page and all, but these super low numbers for pencilling and inking don’t even accurately illustrate just how SUPER low the female participation really was.  Colourists and assistant editors had decent weeks again, and cover artists are okay, but the rest is pretty bad.  I have no idea how 5% female editors happened… that’s miniscule.  This is a pitiful way to close out your big Flashpoint month, DC.

Notes:

  • Remember when the Beach Boys were on Home Improvement as Wilson’s cousins?  That was hilarious.  I’m listening to “Barbara Ann” and it reminded me of Wilson singing along.  Wilson was the best.
  • The busiest book of the week was the JSA 80-Page Giant 2011 with 25 creators, 1 of them a lady.  That certainly didn’t help the overall average.
  • Batman, Inc. #7, Detective Comics #878, and Scalped #50 all had two female creators each, but Detective Comics #878 had the best percentage of female creators at 2 of 7.
