Marvel started July way ahead of their poor June monthly total AND beat DC, so it was a strong week all around!! On July 6, 2011, Marvel put out 22 new books featuring 178 creators, 158 male and 20 female. Here are their smidge better than DC totals:
After putting up 8.7% overall in June, the jump to 11.2% is a welcome sight. That’s quite a substantial gain. As always, though, it’s just the first week, and big jumps tend to be followed by big falls. But you never know what you’re going to get with Marvel. The numbers by category aren’t too bad either:
And here they are in a chart:
Pencillers are the only category that’s glaringly below average, while writers are in the double digits… that’s a good sign. Marvel’s not been terrible with female writers the past couple months, but they’ve certainly been less good than usual, and hopefully these high numbers will continue. Everything else appears solidly within average, if not a smidge above, and although assistant editors are high as always, there is solid contribution across the board. This was a good week for Marvel.
Notes:
- There were six brand new series this week that didn’t really help the overall total at all… they were a combined 2 for 46. The established books did all the heavy lifting this week.
- The busiest book of the week was X-Men #14 with 14 creators, none of them ladies. This wasn’t one of the heavy lifters then.
- But 15 Love #2 was, and it tied X-23 #12 for most female creators, numberwise, with 3. X-23 #12 was tops for percentage at 3 of 6.
