I've been suspicious that the general sales drop at DC is due to the sheer amount of thrashing -- universe reboots, writer changes, artist changes happen at least once a year on every single book, it seems like. Marvel has been having some of the same problems with excessive writer and artist changes, and although they don't reboot the universe, they have an excessive taste for massive everything-altering crossovers.

It takes time to build up a readership -- time and *consistency*. I can't count how many times I've discovered a really good author/artist run on a book *after it's ended* -- the result is I buy practically everything from Marvel and DC only in back issues now. I'd say that it takes about two years of the same team and story before you can tell whether people liked it -- but nobody ever gets that opportunity anymore. Contrast the practice in earlier decades.
