Marvel had a pretty consistent month overall, though their categories are sporadically odd. While they’ve been doing really well with female creators lately, there are still a few categories where women are very underrepresented. Well, more underrepresented than they are everywhere else… it’s underrepresentation across the board, really. That’s how it goes in superhero comics. Let’s take a look at their overall numbers:
These are some really solid numbers. Every week is in double digits, which is rare, and the last two weeks especially are above average. The high isn’t as high as Marvel sometimes hits, but the low isn’t as low either, so it evens out. It’s nice to see such consistent numbers, though the consistency doesn’t quite hold up on the mega-chart:
Marvel had 9 zeroes in June, but here in July their zero counter is up to 12!! That’s not good to see. That’s nearly 40% zeroes. The slots where there were female creators were generally decent, but those zeroes are glaring.
Cover artists, however, had a strong month. Only one week was particularly low, and they were into double digits in another week. Plus, no zeroes. That’s good to see. Covers are the only spot that female artists seem to be getting regular work from Marvel.
Writers had an okay month, and were up slightly from June. The zero isn’t great, but there were writers for the other three weeks and one week hit double digits. I miss the days when Marvel would hit 20% for writers, though. Sure, every other category was abysmal back then, but a 20% week in a creative category, especially writing, is always exciting.
Let’s not mince words: These stats for female artists are TERRIBLE. One penciller, two inkers, and 6 of the 8 weeks with NO female artists at all is shameful given the wealth of great female artists out there. I’m not saying Marvel needs to have 20 of them every month, though that would be awesome, but at least once a week seems more than reasonable and very doable, and would be WAY better than what they’re putting up now. This is pathetic.
I have no idea what happened with colorists that second week. All of the other weeks were very consistent. That zero is weird, but every other week had a strong number at least. There were no female letterers, of course. Let’s turn to our female letterer vigil, marking the days since a female letterer last worked on a Marvel comic book, way back on January 26, 2011:

It wasn’t the best month for editors. The first two weeks were really low, and the last two weeks weren’t really high enough to counteract them. The teens are never good to see with editors… the average is about the mid-20s. Assistant editors did okay, and stayed out of the teens at least.
Ultimately, the overall numbers for Marvel were quite good, but there were some troubling stats on the mega-chart. Artists in particular are a really bad spot for Marvel right now, and their wealth of zeroes isn’t good to see. On the bright side, because their overall numbers are good despite this, if they do get it together with female artists then everything’s going to go up, which would be nice. Let’s hope they get on that.
- The busiest book of the month was Avengers vs. X-Men #8 with 14 creators, 3 of them ladies.
- The book with the highest percentage of female creators was The Muppets #1 at 3 of 6. There were a lot of other good books though: Avenging Spider-Man #9 was 3 of 7, Space Punisher #1 was 2 of 5, the new Captain Marvel #1 was 3 of 10, and Astonishing X-Men #52 was 4 of 10.
