Twelve Days of Wonder Woman: Day Eight

December 20, 2010

Welcome to the eighth day of holiday cover fun!!

Our cover for today is not Christmasy per se, but it’s wintery… that’s close enough.  It’s from Comic Cavalcade #20, drawn by Martin Naydel, and shows Green Lantern, the Flash, and Wonder Woman teaming up to build a snowman:

He’s got a corncob pipe and everything!  Now here’s what’s interesting: The song, “Frosty the Snowman”, was first released in 1950.  This cover includes two eyes made out of coal, an old silk hat, and the corncob pipe… the only thing missing is a button nose.  However, this issue came out in 1947, three years before “Frosty the Snowman” was released!!  DC Comics might have a lawsuit here… Martin Naydel could be due a chunk of the “Frosty the Snowman” empire.

Twelve Days of Wonder Woman: Day Seven

December 19, 2010

It is our seventh day of festive covers, but do we rest?  Of course not!!

Today, our holiday theme takes a turn towards the dark side (it seems there are only eleven cheery Wonder Woman Christmas covers… sorry) with Justice League of America #110, drawn by Nick Cardy.  Santa Claus has been murdered (and startling so) but fear not, for the Justice League is on the case:

If you look closely at the cover, you can see that it states “Here come TV’s Super-Friends!”, a reference to the popular Saturday morning cartoon.  I’m not sure who thought that a cover featuring the murder of Santa Claus was a good way to capitalize on the success of a children’s television show, but the juxtaposition of the two is pretty amusing.

Twelve Days of Wonder Woman: Day Six

December 18, 2010

The Christmas covers keep on coming for the sixth day!!

We again draw from the marvelous Comic Cavalcade well with Comic Cavalcade #13, illustrated by Everett E. Hibbard.  The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern are wishing seasons greetings to one of their winged friends.  Or, if the heroes are on the outside (it looks like there is snow falling behind them), then they are creepily looking into someone’s home:

The big question, of course, is why hasn’t the bird flown south for the winter?  What sort of bird hangs around at Christmastime in a cold climate?  Maybe the cover is set in the south… say, Miami.  And there was a surprise snowstorm and the bird’s all “What the hell is this?” and the heroes are calming down the poor guy.

Or Hibbard just felt like drawing a bird.  Either or.

Twelve Days of Wonder Woman: Day Five

December 17, 2010

FIVE GOLDEN RINGS… or, rather, the fifth day!!

Today’s cover is from the 1975 special edition Christmas with the Super-Heroes, and is drawn by Curt Swan and Bob Oksner.  It features expected heroes, like Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Santa, but also, and somewhat bizarrely, includes Cain from House of Mystery, and a Golden Age Sandman and Sandy the Golden Boy:

This issue actually sounds like a crazy good time.  It was oversized, reprinting several holiday themed stories, along with some puzzles and that spiffy new Curt Swan cover.  DC should think about bringing that back… the holiday specials they do now are fun and all, but oversized with puzzles would be super cool.

Twelve Days of Wonder Woman: Day Four

December 16, 2010

Day four is now upon us, with another holiday cover!!

We are back to Comic Cavalcade, with Comic Cavalcade #19, drawn by Everett E. Hibbard.  Green Lantern, the Flash, and Wonder Woman have hit the slopes, sharing a pair of skis, which really doesn’t make a lick of sense:

First off, who shares skis?  I don’t think that’s a thing… it’s not like a bicycle or something.  Second, skiing at night?  That’s seriously unsafe, especially when you are looking up at Santa and not ahead for trees you might run into.  At least the Flash is wearing a helmet.  Kudos to him for sending a good safety message.

Twelve Days of Wonder Woman: Day Three

December 15, 2010

We have reached the third day!!  We need some French hens.

Here is the great cover of Super Friends #10, drawn by J. Bone.  The Super Friends are engaged in all kinds of festive activities, and are being very inclusive by celebrating Christmas AND Hanukkah:

Wonder Woman conducting the choir is hilarious.  I’m impressed that Batman is singing without her having to use the lasso on him… that does not seem like his scene.  Also, I know Aquaman can communicate with sea creatures, but does a penguin count as a sea creature?  I am trying to sort out if Aquaman made that penguin come along, or if it just showed up of its own accord.

Twelve Days of Wonder Woman: Day Two

December 14, 2010

It’s the second day of our holiday countdown!!

Today we have Comic Cavalcade #5, drawn by Frank Harry.  Green Lantern, the Flash, and Wonder Woman have stopped by to visit a jolly, and oddly gigantic, Santa Claus:

Comic Cavalcade has some FANTASTIC covers, most of which feature these three heroes teaming up in some sort of fun activity.  Wartime All Star Comics covers always featured Wonder Woman, alongside the Justice Society, fighting the Axis in a terribly serious manner, but Comic Cavalcade covers were just straight up fun, with the heroes playing sports or going to an amusement park.  Comic Cavalcade will provide us with a lot of our Christmas covers… they really went all out with their winter issues.
