I’m sort of curious about this book. If the stories are at all inspired by the old Young Romance comics the book is named after, they could be weird and fun, and anything that comes with perforated Valentine’s Day cards you can pop out and give away is a good time. The comic, properly titled Young Romance: A New 52 Valentine’s Day Special #1 (it rolls off the tongue) comes out tomorrow, and DC’s put up a preview.
Most relevant to us is the following four page look at Wonder Woman and Superman out on a date. “Truth or Dare” is written by Andy Diggle (soon to take over Action Comics) and drawn by Robson Rocha and Julio Ferreira. Let’s take a look:
I have come quick thoughts:
a) I hate Wonder Woman and Superman together so very much, and this may colour my reaction to the story.
b) While this is only four pages of the story and maybe it gets awesome later, I don’t care for it at all.
c) Wonder Woman and Superman are just the blandest couple. All they talk about is being a superhero and the complications therein. I’ve yet to see them have ANY sort of fun together.
d) Here they seem to be trying to blend the god-centric vibe of Wonder Woman with the tone of the Super-books, and boy oh boy is not working for me. Azzarello and Chiang have carved out their own little corner of the DCnU, and seeing parts of it elsewhere in a different style just feels weird.
e) Also, Wonder Woman gets duped AGAIN? Good lord. She never thought that a member of her super tricksy family might be trying to pull something? I mean:
f) Also, what is up with that outfit? Not even just the lowcutness, but the weird red leatherish halter top and and slacks. Who wears that?
So yeah, this isn’t my favourite story so far. However, the other half of the preview over at DC is a Batman/Catwoman story illustrated by Emanuela Lupacchino that looks absolutely gorgeous, so that’s fun!! It would be awesome if DC could get her on a regular book. She’s super good.
Look for Young Romance: A New 52 Valentine’s Day Special #1 tomorrow at comic shops everywhere. It might be fun or it might suck, but either way you’ll get some fun DC-themed Valentine’s cards to give to your friends and loved ones.
