Happy Valentine’s Day, gang!! I hope you’re all getting chocolates and cards and flowers and whatnot. Over on his tumblr, Wonder Woman artist Cliff Chiang has given us all a fun Valentine’s present with his interpretation of the “classic” Wonder Woman/Superman kiss. I’ve been rather critical of this entire relationship, and particularly of how Wonder Woman’s appeared passive in every single image we’ve seen thus far. She’s always enveloped by Superman, like it’s a romance novel cover or some such, and their adventures together are just god awful. “Teach me about secret identities, Clark!! I just don’t understand them!! Tee hee” is not a story I want to read.
Now, of course it’s absolutely fine to be passively enveloped by your significant other or to learn new things from them. My problem isn’t with Wonder Woman being in such a role, but rather that so far she’s been in such a role with Superman ALL the time. A perpetual passive role isn’t cool at all, especially for Wonder Woman!! You’ve got to mix it up a bit.
Luckily, Cliff Chiang has the remedy with this new piece:
Superman is all lassoed and wrapped up in his cape, and is putty in Wonder Woman’s hands. It’s a great, clever piece, and a fun Valentine’s surprise from Chiang.
Also, for those of you who might be concerned that this is an upcoming cover and that the Wonder Woman/Superman romance will infect Wonder Woman, fear not!! It’s a commission for a fan, and not any sort of official piece for DC.
So enjoy Valentine’s Day, everyone!! And watch out for arrows. With everyone super into The Hunger Games and Brave and Hawkeye, people might be feeling a little bit literal today.
