Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang seem to be using August as a sort of season finale for Wonder Woman, with a big closer before whatever random September event DC has planned. Last year we had the conclusion of the stolen baby arc, with various twists and turns and some exciting reveals at the end. This year, it looks like we’ve got the First Born battle we’ve been building to all year. Let’s take a look at the preview for Wonder Woman #23, courtesy of Newsarama:
It looks like this should be a pretty crazy issue. Wonder Woman taking down all those jackal men is super fun, and Ares’ legions of what seem to be dead soldiers should be quite a scene. At first I was a little bit concerned that Ares was going to be the one to save the day, since too often in the series it’s a male character who gets the decisive blow. However, we’re only five pages in here. I’m sure Ares’ soldiers will be effective, but we’ve got enough space for something to go awry so Wonder Woman can come in and win the battle herself. Hopefully that’s what happens. Wonder Woman is a much better comic book when Wonder Woman gets to be the actual hero.
Wonder Woman #23 is out this Wednesday, and given the future solicits it sounds like some big things are going to happen. After a shaky year, the book has been on a decent run for the past couple of issues, aided enormously by the return of Cliff Chiang, and I’m excited to see how the finale plays out! From the solicits and covers, my prediction is that Ares dies and Wonder Woman becomes the god of war, but we’ll have to wait until Wednesday to find out if I’m right. I’m probably not, but you never know.
