Wonder Woman’s September 2014 “Future’s End” Solicits

Every September since the New 52 relaunch, DC has done some sort of special event. In 2012, they did #0 issues, telling stories from the character’s past. In 2013, they did Villains Month, and rejiggered their entire line to have 52 villain-led titles. In 2014, DC is planning to have all of their titles jump ahead five years as a tie-in with their new weekly series, The New 52: Future’s End, which is set in the future and will launch in May.

Like with their Villains Month comics, DC is doing fancy 3D covers again. There was a whole mess with retailers last year who under-ordered covers, so they’re releasing a list of the comics several months early; as a comparison, the July 2014 covers will come out later today, so DC is going two months ahead of the game for their big September event.

We don’t have any art or creative teams yet, but we do have descriptions of each book so let’s take a look at what Wonder Woman will be up to five years in the future. First up, Wonder Woman:

32 pg, FC • RATED T
3-D Motion Edition: $3.99 US
2-D Standard Edition: $2.99 US
Her humanity lost forever, Wonder Woman embraces her true nature as the God of War to battle the armies of Nemesis!

Hey, the fancy cover will cost a dollar more. Awesome. That’s totally worth it for what appears to be early 90s technology.

But onto the comic itself. “Her humanity lost forever” is a terrible, terrible way to begin a description of a Wonder Woman comic. Wonder Woman is all about her humanity, so a book where she loses herself fully in her divine identity as the God of War doesn’t sound like a fun time at all. I like a Wonder Woman who is a superhero that helps people, which apparently is a difficult thing to get these days.

I have no idea who the armies of Nemesis are. Pre-New 52, Nemesis was a guy that Wonder Woman worked with as her secret agent alter ego, Diana Prince, and the two had a bit of a romance. I suspect this Nemesis is a much bigger deal, perhaps with mythological origins.

So Wonder Woman doesn’t sound great, but what about Superman/Wonder Woman?

2-D Standard Edition: $2.99 US
The battle between the God of War and Nemesis can only spell doom for humanity – but can Kal restore Diana to her senses before it’s too late?

So not only has Wonder Woman gone off the rails, starting a war that could destroy humanity, but Superman is going to come in and sort it all out? Come on. I feel like DC is just screwing with me sometimes. The last thing Wonder Woman needs right now is another story where a man comes by to sort her out because she’s gotten herself too deep into a bad situation. Also, I don’t want a Wonder Woman that needs to be “restored to her senses.” Just make her an awesome superhero for a change! It’s not that hard.

Anyway, I’m not particularly excited for either of these books. We’ll probably have cover art and creative teams in a couple of months, when the September solicits would usually come out, but until then enjoy these rather un-Wonder Womanlike solicits.

I can’t believe they will do this with WW, even if this story never happens it still is disrespectiful to the hero she is. So a man will save her and bring to her his humanity? Kal is a alien…

yeah remember, according to Batman Wonder Woman is a conceited bitch. Unlike Superman, she doesn’t see herself as a person, she’s exceptional and she freaking knows it so. Soule’s really succeeded to destroy the character of Wonder Woman like only Tom Taylor and Mark Millar have done before lmao

  2. Bob Says:

Clark…sorry “Kal” is barely holding on to his humanity as it is, and he’s going to save WW’s?! Give me a break!

I know these both tie into FE crossover but it looks like these two books have their own small crossover? Is this when the new writer will jump on. I guess we WILL be seeing (more) superman in the WW book?😦

I’ll have stopped buying it by then i guess

It wouldn’t surprise me if Azzarello wrote this issue of Wonder Woman, on account of he’s involved in the Future’s End weekly series. But we won’t know for sure for a couple of months, most likely.

I don’t know, I think WW going “evil” and embracing her nature as God of War is a great way to go. Kind of an inevitable outcome due to Azzarello’s run. Making Diana God of War was going to have repercussions and this is it. Hanley my friend, did you honestly think WW being the God of War was going to be a good title for her to have? She is no god of war, god of truth maybe, but not war. Diana and the concept of “war” being together simply makes no sense. Period. Actually I’m kind of hoping Azzarello writes this Futures End plot…but I don’t think he will be😦

“Just make her an awesome superhero for a change! It’s not that hard.”, not to be rude but if you want that go read Greg Rucka’s or Gail Simone’s run. I don’t mind change as long as WW comes out stronger because of it. After this, she could go do awesome superhero stuff😛

Now I’m not implying that this idea will be good or well written for that matter, I’m only saying the concept is good. Personally I’d rather have Diana herself coming to the realization that being God of War is a bad idea…instead of freaking Superman doing it. But, it could be both, who knows?

    • Tim Hanley Says:

I actually did think Wonder Woman being the God of War could turn out well for her. I don’t see the title as something inherently cursed; I thought she might bring honour to it and do war better, more as a last resort than a constant pursuit. A Wonder Woman who gets overwhelmed by war and bloodlust to the point of threatening all of humanity doesn’t sound like the Wonder Woman I know.

As for Rucka’s and Simone’s run, I’ve read those already🙂 I want new Wonder Woman comics where she’s a superhero, not one where she’s Superman’s girlfriend and another where she’s a homicidal god of war and destruction. Batman fans have it so easy; they get like 12 Batmans a month. We Wonder Woman fans don’t have much to choose from, and I’d like at least one of those choices to be awesome superhero stuff.

    • Popper Most Says:

Athena is a benevolent goddess of war so I didn’t necessarily see this new development as a bad thing but I didn’t think she was gonna go nuts. As peace needs to be hard fought for for as long as evil exists in the world, Wonder Woman could become the Goddess of War(against Evil), channel her powers towards good ends, and continue doing what she’s always done, fight the never-ending battle against the forces of beelzebub, not in the capacity of a soldier but in the capacity of the freaking god of war.

    • cc Says:

Anyone a you compared ever the solicits and the actual issues of Wonder Woman? What you’ll find is that they more or less never match up.

And “humanity” could might as well mean that she’s a God and not a living thing.

Shows how much you some of you read the book calling her homicidal and what not. I suggest you read the actual issues instead of just the solicits and looking at the covers…
