Wonder Woman’s August 2014 Covers And Solicits

Hey, Wonder Woman’s got three monthly books now! One of them is not so great, but oh well, Sensation Comics is back! It’s like the Golden Age all over again. We haven’t had a Wonder Woman-starring Sensation Comics since 1951, which coincidentally was about the time she was headlining two books and co-starring in another (Comic Cavalcade). The good old days are here again.

So let’s see what Wonder Woman will be up to this August, starting with her eponymous series:

Is this the end of Olympus and the gods? Wonder Woman is locked in a desperate battle with the First Born with the destiny of immortals at stake – and she must make a decision that will affect the lives of those she loves most.

If I’m being perfectly honest, I don’t love this cover, which is rare for me with Cliff Chiang’s work. The art is fine, but not particularly striking, and the muted colours give it a bland quality. Also, is she fighting the First Born there? Because that really doesn’t look like him. Perhaps he’s starting to grow some of his skin back now, and has fashioned himself a weird crown.

The solicit is vague, yet again. The big finale continues to unfold, with Wonder Woman fighting the First Born with Olympus at stake. While storylines usually wrap up in August, Azzarello has said that he and Chiang’s run will continue into the fall, so don’t expect the resolution we usually get with an August issue of Wonder Woman.

Also, DC is doing selfie variants for some reason, presumably because they’ve run out of good ideas, and Wonder Woman is going to get one.

So too is Superman/Wonder Woman. DC is so trendy and hip to the kids:

“Last Sun,” the next sensational chapter in the “SUPERMAN: DOOMED” saga! Diana must do the unspeakable as the God of War in her effort to beat the forces of Brainiac! And now, there is no Kal-El – only Doom!

“Doomed” keeps on rolling along in August, and I predict it will be trying my patience mightily by that point. It sounds like Wonder Woman has to bust up Brainiac or something, and wasn’t Lois some form of Brainiac in the July solicit? I don’t know. Superman’s all monstered up, much destruction will ensue, and nothing will really change, most likely.

Superman/Wonder Woman no longer aggravates me as much because know we have a third Wonder Woman book to make things far more fun. I know I posted the solicit yesterday, but here it is again:

DIGITAL FIRST
Diana Prince: Amazon warrior, ambassador to Man’s world, or champion of women in need? All of the above! This digital-first anthology series will bring some of comics’ greatest talents to Themyscira, and give them leave to explore Diana, her world – and ours!
Gail Simone and Ethan Van Sciver kick things off when Oracle calls for help after the entire Bat-Family gets sidelined. But when Wonder Woman steps into the breach, Gotham City’s criminals get the surprise of their lives! Then, Amanda Deibert and Cat Staggs take Diana to school, where she meets her biggest fan!

I’m so happy this is going to exist. I like aspects of Wonder Woman in the New 52, but all in all the whole universe is kind of a drag. This sounds like it will be a blast, and I can’t wait to see the sorts of stories people tell with all of her history at their disposal. DC’s digital department has been doing some very cool stuff, and I have high hopes for this book.

Look for all of these Wonder Woman-starring books this August, at your local comic shop or online. Sensation Comics will be available in smaller installments online before the series debuts in print, so keep your eye out for that.

  1. That’s the Chiang I know and Love, that cover is S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G and tbh, I’m not usually a big fan of Tony Daniel but that’s a beautiful cover too, she looks like an aquaperson but not in a bad way. happy days
