I’m a couple days behind on this, but I’ve been busy vacationing and reading a Star Trek novel from 1986 that is bizarrely similar to Star Trek Into Darkness. It’s got a huge, secret starship and everything, though no Khan. Anyway, Nikki Finke, the movie rumour master, is back online and one of her first big scoops is the supposed release schedule for DC’s upcoming movie slate. Here’s the full list:
- May 2016 – Batman v Superman
- July 2016 – Shazam
- Xmas 2016 – Sandman
- May 2017 – Justice League
- July 2017 – Wonder Woman
- Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
- May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2
Batman v Superman we knew already, and that Justice League was coming, but so many other movies so soon is a big surprise, most notably a Wonder Woman film in July 2017. The only details we have concerning Wonder Woman is what we already know: Gal Gadot is Wonder Woman. We have no writer, director, or stars for most of the new titles above.
Now, these are just rumours and, as Wonder Woman fans, we’ve been burned far too many times before to put much stock in any Wonder Woman project, much less rumours thereof. We’ve been promised movies before, and a variety of television projects, and yet we still haven’t had a live action Wonder Woman since Lynda Carter. I’m so gun shy that I’ll still be a little suspicious even if DC does announce a Wonder Woman movie at Comic Con, as Finke seems to think they will.
I’m in no position to rate the veracity of this rumour; I don’t know what her sources are, though Finke is usually pretty good. That many movies in such a short time span seems unlikely to me, if only because a) they’ve been pretty slow getting Batman v Superman rolling, and Sandman doesn’t seem to be coming together too fast either, b) I figured DC would see how audiences responded to the various superheroes in Batman v Superman before deciding where to go next, and c) three movies a year seems like over saturation to me. I know Marvel does it between Disney, Sony, and 20th Century Fox, but they’re not all connected properties. Most of this list is. So I’m slightly leery of this rumour (thus the picture of a skeptical Gal Gadot atop this post), but it could very well be true. I suppose we’ll find out in a month or so!
If it is true, soon we’ll begin the anxious wait to find out who is actually making Wonder Woman. So much is going to ride on the writer and director, though with Zack Snyder directing Justice League it seems unlikely he’d have time for Wonder Woman if the schedule above holds true; that’s a good sign, at least.
