Let’s not beat around the bush here, gang: The Legend of Wonder Woman is the best Wonder Woman comic in years and everyone needs to hit their local comic shop today and treat themselves to the first print issue. The book’s been coming out in digital installments for several weeks now and it’s fantastic. Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon are presenting a new take on Wonder Woman and the Amazons that is simultaneously fresh and iconic, taking the characters in cool new directions while remaining faithful to the spirit of the character’s best incarnations. It’s really, really, really good.
The book is also gorgeous. De Liz gives each Amazon a distinctive look, Themyscira is beautiful and mysterious, and young, brooding Diana is pretty much the cutest thing ever. Plus there are all sorts of fun mythical creatures and monsters in the mix. And kangas! You know it’s a good Wonder Woman book when there are kangas. The series looks great digitally, and it will be extra lovely all put together in the print edition.
The first issue comes with two great covers as well, the primary Renae De Liz cover and a variant by Dustin Nguyen. It’s going to be hard to choose between the two of them, so I’d suggest just buying both, if you can. Support a rad book AND get two lovely covers; it’s a win-win.
If you’re looking for reviews after you read the issue, I’ve been reviewing the series digitally since it began so here are links to my reviews of the three digital installments that comprise the first issue:
The reviews are all rather glowing, but that’s because the book is ridiculously good.
So yeah, do yourself a personal favour and pick up the first print issue of The Legend of Wonder Woman. Trust me on this, gang. I wrote a book about Wonder Woman, and read ALL of the Wonder Woman comics while doing so. Like, every single one. The Legend of Wonder Woman is one of my favourite Wonder Woman comics ever, and among the best takes on this fantastic character. Try out the first issue and I promise you’ll be buying the rest. It’s a real treat.
