Wonder Woman’s January 2015 Comic Covers And Solicits

October 21, 2014

DC Comics’ full January solicits went up yesterday, and Wonder Woman’s got a lot on the go with her three regular series. I thought that we might see the print version of the new Wonder Woman ’77 set for January as well, but it’s not on the list. Perhaps in February.

But we’ve got three other books I am looking forward to on a scale that ranges from “Not At All” to “Quite A Lot.” Let’s start with the book I’m least looking forward to, Wonder Woman #38:

With her people against her, Wonder Woman has left Paradise Island more uncertain of her intentions than ever before! And with only the mantle of God of War to turn to, she’s challenged to give that up!

Well, that’s certainly an interesting cover. A berserker, blood spattered god of war Wonder Woman. Yeesh. That is not an appealing image.

As for the story, it sounds like Wonder Woman and the Amazons are having a bit of a spat. We’ve seen that sort of story done about 78 times before, including in the run that immediately preceded the Finches taking over, so that seems like an odd choice. It’s hard to have a fresh take on something that’s been done to death. Some month, I’d like Wonder Woman to have a really nice time in her own book for a change. Things go well, her family and friends are kind and helpful, and she takes out a bad guy and saves the day. No rage, no blood, no betrayal, just a pleasant day of superheroing. I know, it’ll never happen.

Onto Superman/Wonder Woman #15, which I remain very curious about:

Wonderstar’s destiny is starting to become clear – and his path may lead to the end of humanity! Will Superman and Wonder Woman be able to prevent him from becoming what – or who – he’s meant to be?

I love that Superman is getting blasted on the cover while Wonder Woman remains unharmed. That’s a fun change from what we’ve seen in past Superman/Wonder Woman covers.

Also, random sidenote, is it just me or does Wonder Woman look like the gal from The Blacklist on that cover?

I know absolutely nothing about this run or the new Wonderstar character on account of Tomasi and Mahnke don’t even start on the book until next month, but here’s my theory on what’s going down: Wonderstar is either Superman and Wonder Woman’s kid from the future and/or an alternate universe, or it’s some kind of mixed clone thing that’s half Wonder Woman and half Superman. Either way, I think they’ll have some parental connection to this new character, and that’s why they’re so involved with him. We’ll see how it plays out over the next few months. I’m probably absolutely wrong, but you never know.

Finally, the book I am most excited for, Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman #6:

Hippolyta’s first rule of war is demonstrated in “Generations,” as Diana and Cheetah battle over a phoenix egg – and its promise of immortality! Then Diana and Big Barda fight the awesome menace of robot gorillas in “Not Included.”

This cover isn’t doing much for me, but here’s what I’m excited about: BIG BARDA. I LOVE Big Barda, and a Big Barda/Wonder Woman team up is everything I could possibly want in a comic book. Plus they’re fighting ROBOT GORILLAS. Sign me up. This is already THE comic book of 2015 for me.

And there’s a Cheetah story too! Talk about bang for your buck. In a world of New 52 darkness, Sensation Comics is the gift that keeps on giving.

I will say that I’m a little bit disappointed at the lack of female creators, though. Usually Sensation Comics is good for at least one somewhere in the mix. Hopefully there’ll be some in February.

Look for all of these Wonder Woman comics in January online or at fine comic book shops everywhere!

Cover And Solicit For Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #3

July 10, 2014

In advance of DC’s full October solicits, which I assume will be out this Monday, we’ve got an early look at one of Wonder Woman’s titles, Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman #3. The following cover and solicit are courtesy of MTV News, who are on quite a run with comic scoops after they revealed the stellar new Batgirl creative team earlier today. Let’s check out what’s coming up in Sensation Comics:

SENSATION COMICS FEATURING WONDER WOMAN #3
Written by GILBERT HERNANDEZ and SEAN E. WILLIAMS
Art by GILBERT HERNANDEZ and MARGUERITE SAUVAGE
Cover by IVAN REIS and JOE PRADO

When Wonder Woman allows an other dimensional science-villain to capture her, she expects to swiftly deal with his android minions and save the day. But he’s able to brainwash her and that’s when things go haywire! Then, back on Earth, we share a rare moment from Diana’s rock-star days.

First, this is a lovely cover from Ivan Reis, featuring the classic Wonder Woman costume. Reis has gotten to draw Wonder Woman a lot in Justice League, but it’s nice to see him get to focus on her specifically and bring back more traditional duds.

Second, Gilbert Hernandez!! That’s so exciting. He’s one of the legendary Hernandez Brothers of Love and Rockets fame, and his graphic novel Marble Season was one of my favourite books of 2013. I can’t wait to see his take on Diana.

Third, we’ve got a female artist as well. Marguerite Sauvage came up recently as the new cover artist for Hinterkind, and now she’s moving to interiors. She’s a great artist, and this should be a lovely issue all around.

The issue hits stores on October 15, with digital editions of the stories premiering in the weeks before that. This should be a great one, so check it out!

Wonder Woman #19 Cover Revealed!!

January 11, 2013

I got this via Bleeding Cool, who got it via the fine folks at Gotham Spoilers doing that clever URL thing to see the covers early.  Thanks to them, here’s the cover for Wonder Woman #19:

ww19cover

Wonder Woman and Orion face off!!  Literally, actually.  She’s ripping the mask right off his face.  And he does not seem pleased about it.  It’s not my favourite Chiang cover, but I do always love Wonder Womab busting up someone.

Rich at Bleeding Cool thinks that DC might be doing gatefold covers for all of their April titles, and that there’ll be more to each cover when we open the book.  A lot of the other April covers do sort of look like half-images, so he might be onto something there.  I suspect we’ll find out next week sometime.

Covers And Solicits For Wonder Woman #16, Batwoman #16, And Justice League #16

October 15, 2012

Wonder Woman super busy in January.  She’s got her own book, her guest-starring arc in Batwoman, and of course our regularly scheduled inter-superhero fighting in Justice League.  Let’s take a look at Wonder Woman #16 first:

WONDER WOMAN #16
Written by BRIAN AZZARELLO
Art and cover by CLIFF CHIANG
On sale JANUARY 23 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
• Wonder Woman and her half brother Milan must grapple with the dangerous New God known as Orion!
• What strange alliance has the terrifying First Born made?

We saw this cover the other day, but now we’ve got a solicit to go with it.  Still no answer on that nasty fly situation, though.  And we’ve got another half-brother for Wonder Woman!!  Much like I have no idea what’s up with this First Born dude, I have no idea who Milan is either.  Zeus really gets around, so lord only knows how many new siblings Wonder Woman will meet before Azzarello’s run is over.  Anyway, we’ve got some new info, but it’s not telling us a whole bunch.  Informative AND cryptic… good work with the teaser!!

On to Batwoman #16:

BATWOMAN #16
Written by J.H. WILLIAMS III and W. HADEN BLACKMAN
Art and cover by J.H. WILLIAMS III
On sale JANUARY 23 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T+
• This issue guest-stars everybody!
• In this penultimate chapter, everything that’s been happening in BATWOMAN comes to a head!
• Plus, a new hero is introduced, and Wonder Woman fights monsters!

You had me with “Wonder Woman fights monsters!”  I’ll pay three bucks for that any day of the week.  Also, it looks like Wonder Woman will be in Batwoman in February too.  This is quite an arc.  It’s fun that we’ve got an extended team-up.  Plus, I’m excited for Williams to draw “everybody.”

Finally, friggin’ Justice League #16:

JUSTICE LEAGUE #16
Written by GEOFF JOHNS
Art and cover by IVAN REIS and JOE PRADO
Backup story art by GARY FRANK
Variant cover by LANGDON FOSS
On sale JANUARY 23 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
• “THRONE OF ATLANTIS” continues!
• Aquaman can barely hold on against Ocean Master even with the League by his side!
• The United States loses faith in the Justice League and enters the battle against Atlantis, setting in motion the creation of the Justice League of America!
• More on the Superman/Wonder Woman alliance!
• Plus: In the backup story, the origin of SHAZAM! continues!

An “alliance”, eh?  That’s what they’re calling it these days?  Anyway, the Justice League is fighting each other again, and I don’t even care.  Even though the solicit sounds like they’re working together, but whatever.  Maybe they’ll get mind controlled and be pitted against each other.  I don’t much care for this book.

Look for all three Wonder Woman starring books on January 23rd, 2013!!
