Wonder Woman’s March 2017 Covers and Solicits

December 30, 2016

DC’s March 2017 solicits came out a while back, but with the holidays and all I’ve just got around to going through them now. March looks to be another busy month for Wonder Woman and the Amazons, so let’s see what the gang will be up to, starting with Wonder Woman itself:

marchww19

WONDER WOMAN #18
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by BILQUIS EVELY
Variant covers by JENNY FRISON
“GODWATCH” part two! Godwatch grows, and Diana has her first encounter with the ghost in the machine known as Dr. Cyber!
On sale MARCH 8 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

WONDER WOMAN #19
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by LIAM SHARP
Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“The Truth” part three! Diana, Steve and Etta come face-to-face with their newest foes—the deadly group known as Poison! But what do they have to do with the plot to unravel Wonder Woman’s life?
On sale MARCH 22 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

We’ve got Dr. Cyber in one book and Poison (i.e. a group inspired by the classic Wonder Woman villain Dr. Poison) in another, giving us a greatest hits of iconic Wonder Woman villains. Throw in the Cheetah and they’re all doctors too, a web of villainy that reflects poorly on academia but makes for an enjoyable read nonetheless. One has to assume that Dr. Psycho will show up at some point and give us a quartet of dastardly doctors. Wonder Woman‘s been a fun book since Rucka and company relaunched it, and these March issues look like they should be a good time.

Onto Trinity:

marchtrinity

TRINITY #7
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL
Art and cover by CLAY MANN
Variant cover by BILL SIENKIEWICZ
“DIVIDED WE FALL” prelude! America is divided! And now a hero has fallen and it may split the country even more. Can Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman stand against riots while defending a bigoted enemy? Don’t miss the beginning of an epic adventure that will test the ideals of our three heroes!
On sale MARCH 15 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

I’ve been enjoying this book thus far, but it’s got a lot less Francis Manapul art than I anticipated. It looked like he was going to be two on, one off, but that doesn’t seem to be the case now? Clay Mann is decent and all, but Manapul is AMAZING. He brings so much style and heart to the book. DC needs to set him up on a schedule without fill-ins. It’ll take a little longer, but the end result would be so gorgeous. Anyway, it looks like we’re on to a new arc here. I’m not totally sold on the premise, but we’ll see how the execution goes. The book’s been really good, so I’m optimistic.

Now some Bombshells:

marchbombshells

DC COMICS BOMBSHELLS #23
Written by MARGUERITE BENNETT
Art by MATIAS BERGARA, LAURA BRAGA and MIRKA ANDOLFO
Cover by MARGUERITE SAUVAGE
Wonder Woman is back! Take a quick trip to Themyscira where Wonder Woman and Supergirl are mourning the loss of Stargirl. Then, it’s back to the action in Zambesi as Wonder Woman crashes into the fight between the Bombshells and Cheetah, who’s leading the mechanical gods!
On sale MARCH 1 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T • DIGITAL FIRST

I don’t usually post the DC Comics Bombshells solicits, especially lately since Wonder Woman’s been on the backburner, but she’s front and center in this new issue and I wanted to remind everyone to mark it on their calendar and pick it up. This series is SO GOOD, and if you’ve not been reading it you’re really missing out. Plus it’s set to have a lot more Wonder Woman soon, which is even more exciting!

We’ve got some classic TV antics coming too:

marchbat66

BATMAN ’66 MEETS WONDER WOMAN ’77 #3
Written by JEFF PARKER and MARC ANDREYKO
Art by DAVID HAHN and KARL KESEL
Cover by MICHAEL ALLRED
Among the world’s greatest secrets is the location of Paradise Island, mythic home of the legendary Amazon warrior women where no man may visit! But what about a BATman? In 1966, the search for Ra’s al Ghul’s trail heats up, and the Caped Crusaders fly to warn Wonder Woman that her hidden home is the villain’s goal!
On sale MARCH 22 • 32 pg, FC, 3 of 6, $3.99 US • RATED E • DIGITAL FIRST

Batman is going to Paradise Island and I can’t wait. What a fantastic premise, to send the 1960s Batman and Robin to the home of Amazons. This should be hilarious and delightful. I love that this series exists.

Finally, the adventures of the Amazons:

marchodyssey

THE ODYSSEY OF THE AMAZONS #3
Written by KEVIN GREVIOUX
Art and cover by RYAN BENJAMIN and RICHARD FRIEND
It’s Amazons versus Valkyries! Hessia and her warriors are closing in on the Storm Giants who are holding their comrades prisoner when a group of fierce Nordic female warriors misinterpret their intent and launch an all-out assault. Will even the Amazons’ new Viking allies be able to help them against these god-like beings?
On sale MARCH 15 • 32 pg, FC, 3 of 6, $3.99 US • RATED T+

I remain very much unsold on this mini-series, but the first issue isn’t even out yet so I’ll reserve judgment and hope for the best. The covers haven’t been giving me a lot to look forward to, and Storm Giants and Vikings and Valkyries sounds like a Thor rip-off but again, we’ll see. This could be a surprise treat. It’s got Amazons in it, after all! The potential is certainly there.

Look for all of these comics in March 2017! It’s going to be a busy one!

Wonder Woman’s February 2017 Covers and Solicits

November 22, 2016

This February looks to be another busy month for Wonder Woman and her wider world, both in terms of single issues and some fun new collections. It continues to be an excellent time to be a Wonder Woman fan; the movie on the horizon really seems to be ramping up comic production at DC. So let’s take a look at what Wonder Woman is up to in February 2017, starting with her own series:

febww16.jpg

WONDER WOMAN #16
Written by GREG RUCKA • Art and cover by BILQUIS EVELY • Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“GODWATCH” part one! Since the moment Wonder Woman arrived in our world, Godwatch has been waiting. But who are they, and what do they want? Diana’s journey to the truth continues with the origin of what may prove to be her greatest enemies.
On sale FEBRUARY 8 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

WONDER WOMAN #17
Written by GREG RUCKA • Art and cover by LIAM SHARP • Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“THE TRUTH” part two! As Wonder Woman picks up the pieces of her shattered psyche, Barbara Ann Minerva walks into the devil’s lair to defend her…or is she being led into Godwatch’s trap?
On sale FEBRUARY 22 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

How great is that Bilquis Evely cover? She did a spectacular job on the Barbara Ann Minerva special issue last month, and I’m so excited that she’ll be taking over the odd-numbered issues for “Godwatch” after “Year One” ends. Nicola Scott is going to be a tough act to follow, but Evely’s already shown that she’s got the goods to hold her own. We’ve got some gorgeous comics in store for us.

In terms of the plots, it will be fun to dig into Godwatch and find out what they’re all about. We know a few of the players now from “The Lies” but clearly there’s something large and sinister at work here. As for “The Truth,” the solicit is a bit vague, but I enjoy that Barbara is remaining a key player in the book. Between her and Etta, it’s great to see Wonder Woman have some female pals.

Onto the always gorgeous Trinity:

febtrinity6

TRINITY #6
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL • Art and cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL • Variant cover by BILL SIENKIEWICZ
“Better Together” part six! The horror that kept our heroes trapped in nightmares of their own making is now loose in the world, and it’s taking possession of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman! When the spawn of Mongul holds the keys to the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe—no one is safe!
On sale FEBRUARY 15 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

I love this book. I’ve only read the first two issues, but they’re so stunningly gorgeous. The story is a lot of fun too. It’s kind of a chill team up, with the three heroes just being pals. I’m super into it. And it sounds like it’s building to something quite epic. Manapul’s knocking it out of the park so far with this series, and I’m looking forward to where it’s going.

Next up, The Odyssey of the Amazons:

febodyssey2

THE ODYSSEY OF THE AMAZONS #2
Written by KEVIN GREVIOUX
Art by RYAN BENJAMIN and RICHARD FRIEND
Cover by RYAN BENJAMIN
In the frigid lands to the north, Hessia and her Amazons find new allies: a band of Norsemen led by none other than Jon, the Viking Prince. Meanwhile, their captured Amazon sisters learn of the fate planned for them by Groa, Queen of the Storm Giants. And as Hessia and Jon prepare to launch a rescue, a new faction appears! Will these new players prove to be friend or foe?
On sale FEBRUARY 15 • 32 pg, FC, 2 of 6, $3.99 US • RATED T

There’s still a lot of question marks on this one, and it very much feels like a book that should have come out a few years ago, before Rucka and co. revamped the Amazons. But still, it’s Amazons vs. Storm Giants, and that could be cool. We’ll see how it goes. Hopefully the book is a pleasant surprise.

We’ve also got Batman ’66 Meets Wonder Woman ’77:

febbatww77

BATMAN ’66 MEETS WONDER WOMAN ’77 #2
Written by MARC ANDREYKO and JEFF PARKER
Art by DAVID HAHN and KARL KESEL
Cover by MICHAEL ALLRED
Bruce Wayne is only ten—and he’s already being hunted by Nazi soldiers and Ra’s al Ghul’s mysterious League of Shadows! Join the chase as he makes a discovery vital to his bat-future and watch what happens when Wonder Woman comes to the rescue!
On sale FEBRUARY 22 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED E • DIGITAL FIRST

The comic appears to be picking up on the split nature of the Wonder Woman TV show; the first season was set in World War Two, while the second and third picked up in the 1970s. So we’ve got young Bruce interacting with season one Wonder Woman here, which is very cool. This is such a clever way to merge these different universes. I’m really looking forward to this series.

Finally, there are a couple of cool collections on the way:

febjla.jpg

WONDER WOMAN AND THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA VOL. 1 TP
Written by DAN VADO and CHUCK DIXON
Art by MIKE COLLINS, KEVIN WEST, RICK BURCHETT, MARC CAMPOS and others • Cover by MIKE COLLINS and JOSE MARZAN JR.
In these never-before-collected stories from the 1990s, Wonder Woman takes over as leader of the Justice League of America, whether Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle like it or not. Acting at the behest of the United Nations, the team must respond to a human rights crisis in a remote African nation, only to find the populace under the thumbs of the super-powered Extremists. The team then must jet to Norway, where the young superhero called Ice struggles to keep the nation out of the hands of her older brother. Collects JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #78-85, JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA ANNUAL #7 and GUY GARDNER #15.
On sale MARCH 15 • 264 pg, FC, $24.99 US

I often forget about Justice League America and Wonder Woman’s time leading the team, and I’m an expert on the character! Everyone remembers Justice League International and Morrison relaunching JLA, but in between that Justice League America ran for a long time and Wonder Woman was a key player. It’s very cool that this run is getting collected; it’s a fun period of Wonder Woman’s history that sometimes gets overlooked.

We’ve also got more collected George Perez:

febperez2

WONDER WOMAN BY GEORGE PEREZ OMNIBUS VOL. 2 HC
Written by GEORGE PEREZ and others • Art by CHRIS MARRINAN, JILL THOMPSON, COLLEEN DORAN and others • Cover by CHRIS MARRINAN and GEORGE PEREZ
Following the events of INVASION, Wonder Woman and Captain Atom must locate the missing Steve Trevor, while the citizens of Themyscira witness the arrival of a new man on their island. This volume also includes the origins of both Cheetah and Silver Swan, the appearance of a lost tribe of Egyptian Amazons and more! Collects WONDER WOMAN #25-45 and ANNUAL #2.
On sale MAY 10 • 552 pg, FC, $99.99 US

I was hoping that DC would continue their omnibus collection of Perez’s Wonder Woman run past the first volume, and they are! Nearly two years after the first collection, but oh well. It’s continuing on, and that’s exciting, plus it bodes well for a third omnibus to finish the run. Save your pennies and clear some shelf space because this is going to be expensive and massive.

Well, that’s quite a month! It’s nice to have a slew of new Wonder Woman comics to look forward to.

Wonder Woman’s January 2017 Covers and Solicits

October 18, 2016

The New Year is set to begin with a variety of comic books and collections starring Wonder Woman and, in one new series, a group of her fellow Amazons. With the Wonder Woman film on the horizon, DC seems to be putting a bit of extra effort into their Wonder Woman offerings and featuring the character more prominently across the line. So let’s take a look at where Wonder Woman is scheduled to be in the January 2017 solicits, starting with her own series:

janww15.jpg

WONDER WOMAN #14
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by NICOLA SCOTT
Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“YEAR ONE” conclusion! With Steve Trevor by her side, Diana faces the God of War and embraces her destiny as Wonder Woman!
On sale JANUARY 11 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

WONDER WOMAN #15
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by LIAM SHARP
Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“THE TRUTH” part one! Diana has finally seen the full scope of how her life and history have been transformed…unfortunately, the knowledge has driven her completely insane!
On sale JANUARY 25 • Each 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

The cover is Liam Sharp’s, presumably showing an insane Wonder Woman rocked by the revelations of “The Lies.” I like that “The Lies” are going to be followed by “The Truth,” even though it means that it may be a while yet until we get some answers about what’s up with Wonder Woman and her multiple pasts.

Meanwhile, “Year One” is set to conclude with Wonder Woman vs. the God of War, further cementing the fact that Ares will be the “big bad” of the arc as past solicits have hinted. It’s been done before with Wonder Woman origin stories, but it’s also a classic way to go and Rucka and Scott have been doing amazing work thus far.

Onto Trinity #5:

jantrinity4

TRINITY #5
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL
Art and cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL
Variant cover by BILL SIENKIEWICZ
“BETTER TOGETHER” part five! Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman must battle for their lives against their greatest foes in an arena of their own making! And the fight won’t be done until they confront each other in this deadly match. The mastermind behind this attack has revealed himself at last: Mongul is back!
On sale JANUARY 18 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

I absolutely LOVED the first issue of Trinity last month. It was gorgeous and fun and just delightful from start to finish, and I’m excited to see where the book goes. January promises our heroic trio facing off against Mongul and Poison Ivy, which is a pairing I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. I’m intrigued!

We’ve also got the print edition of Batman ’66 Meets Wonder Woman ’77 #1:

janbatww1

BATMAN ’66 MEETS WONDER WOMAN ’77 #1
Written by JEFF PARKER and MARC ANDREYKO
Art by DAVID HAHN and KARL KESEL
Cover by MICHAEL ALLRED
Variant cover by ALEX ROSS
What mysteries are hidden in the book Ra’s al Ghul hired Catwoman to steal? And why does this caper lead Batman down memory lane—to his childhood fight against actual Nazis? Witness the Caped Crusader’s first encounter with one of the greatest heroes the world has ever known: Wonder Woman!
This epic team-up is brought to you by writers Marc Andreyko (WONDER WOMAN ’77) and Jeff Parker (BATMAN ’66), with fantastic artists David Hahn and Karl Kesel (BATMAN ’66 Meets the Man from U.N.C.L.E.). It’s a time- and space-spanning adventure unlike anything you’ve seen before!
On sale JANUARY 18 • 32 pg, FC, 1 of 6, $2.99 US • RATED E • Digital first

This looks like it should be a blast. Both Batman ’66 and Wonder Woman ’77 are enjoyable series, and combining the two just seems logical. I’m curious to see how much interaction the heroes will have; Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman vs. Julie Newmar’s Catwoman would be the coolest too.

Onto a new series starring the Amazons:

janamazons1

THE ODYSSEY OF THE AMAZONS #1
Written by KEVIN GREVIOUX
Art and cover by RYAN BENJAMIN
Variant cover by YASMINE PUTRI
Don’t miss the start of this new miniseries set in the world of Wonder Woman from writer/actor Kevin Grevioux (New Warriors, Underworld). Years before the birth of Princess Diana, a group of Amazons set out on a globe-spanning quest to find others of their kind, encountering legendary creatures and beings along the way. But their journey soon turns into a rescue mission as two of their own are captured by the legendary Storm Giants of Norse mythology. It’s up to their leader, the stalwart Hessia, to keep them together through the many trials that lie ahead.
On sale JANUARY 18 • 32 pg, FC, 1 of 6, $3.99 US • RATED T

I still don’t love this cover. They don’t look like Nicola Scott’s Amazons at all and the crotch shots are rather unnecessary. But a miniseries starring a group of Amazons could be very fun, and I’m hoping for the best here.

Wonder Woman is also front and center on DC’s free guide to their graphic novels:

jandcessential

DC ESSENTIAL GRAPHIC NOVELS 2017
Cover by TONY S. DANIEL and SANDU FLOREA
Now anyone can experience DC from the best starting points possible with 25 graphic novels vital to anyone’s collection. From there, move on to your favorite characters: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League and more, with listings of the most important books to understanding those particular characters. The DC ESSENTIAL GRAPHIC NOVELS 2017 catalog makes it easy to find the perfect story for everyone!
On sale JANUARY 11 • 96 pg, FC, FREE

I just really like that cover. And hopefully, with so much new Wonder Woman material out lately, Wonder Woman will have a larger presence in this year’s book than she’s had in past editions.

Wonder Woman’s starring in some new collections as well, including this one:

janbattles

WONDER WOMAN: HER GREATEST BATTLES TP
Written by GEORGE PEREZ, JOHN BYRNE, GREG RUCKA, GAIL SIMONE, GEOFF JOHNS and BRIAN AZZARELLO
Art by GEORGE PEREZ, JOHN BYRNE, JIM LEE, CLIFF CHIANG and others
Cover by FRANK CHO
This new collection brings together the biggest and most unforgettable battles in Wonder Woman’s history as a DC Comics superhero, as she battles Ares, Cheetah, Medusa and more!
On sale FEBRUARY 8 • 168 pg, FC, $9.99 US

Ugh on the Frank Cho cover, and I’m definitely side-eying DC’s choice to focus on the warrior aspect of Wonder Woman. But that a great group of creators so I’m sure some excellent stories will be reprinted in this one. Plus it’s only $10, which is rad. There were a variety of other Wonder Woman collections in the January 2017 solicits as well, including the trade paperback collection of “The Lies,” the trade of the Finches’ last run on Wonder Woman, and another volume of Wonder Woman ’77.

Finally, Wonder Woman’s got some toys on the go, too, including this fancy figure:

janwwfigure

DC BLUELINE WONDER WOMAN ACTION FIGURE BY JIM LEE
Inspired by the art of Jim Lee, this new black-and-white action figure captures Wonder Woman in all her Amazonian glory!
Measures Approximately 6.75” Tall
$40.00 US • On Sale MAY 2017

While $40 is a lot for an action figure, she does look pretty cool. I’ve seen some other figures from this “Blueline” run and they’re kind of neat. The solicits also listed the Wonder Woman movie statues I mentioned last week, which are lovely and very, very expensive.

So it was a busy round of solicits for Wonder Woman! With the movie on the way, we Wonder Woman enthusiasts may find ourselves going broke to keep up with all of the fun new comics, collections, and collectibles. It’s a fun problem to have.

Wonder Woman’s December 2016 Covers and Solicits

September 20, 2016

December looks to be another fairly low key month on the Wonder Woman front. The recent deluge of new Wonder Woman collections and reprints has dried up for the second straight month, but we’ve got a few fun single issues to dig into, as well as some rad action figures. Let’s take a look at where Wonder Woman will be in December 2016, starting with her own monthly series:

decww12.jpg

WONDER WOMAN #12
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by NICOLA SCOTT
Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“YEAR ONE” part five! The threat is named, and now Wonder Woman and her new allies must rise to meet the coming darkness.
On sale DECEMBER 14 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

WONDER WOMAN #13
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art by MATTHEW CLARK
Cover by LIAM SHARP
Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“BETWEEN THE LIES AND THE TRUTH”! Following the conclusion of “The Lies,” Steve Trevor must grapple with revelations about not only Wonder Woman, but himself as well!
On sale DECEMBER 28 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Nicola Scott gets the cover here yet again, and I still don’t know why DC is refusing to put out two covers for their bi-monthly books. I like to see covers! They’re pretty and fun. At least we get a big reveal out of this one: The “threat” mentioned in the above solicit is clearly Ares, here drawn more in the style of George Perez than the New 52 incarnation who looked like Brian Azzarello. Ares has become a go-to character in Wonder Woman origin stories in the past couple of decades, and I’m curious to see what Rucka and Scott do with him.

Meanwhile, “The Lies” is wrapped up in the odd-numbered issues so we’ll get a special issue with guest artist Matthew Clark that’s focused on Steve Trevor. I don’t know that anyone was clamoring for a Steve Trevor special, but he’s been surprisingly likable and endearing in this run thus far so the issue could be a good time.

Onto Trinity #4:

TRINITY #4
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL
Art and cover by CLAY MANN
Variant cover by BILL SIENKIEWICZ
“BETTER TOGETHER” part four! The trio’s tribulations have turned the Black Mercy’s gift into a world of nightmares that give birth to a horror that can only be called the White Mercy. And what scares Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman could destroy the world!
On sale DECEMBER 21 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

The cover in the solicits for this issue was the same cover we got last month, so either they’re swapping covers or this one isn’t done yet. Either way, I left it out. The Black Mercy storyline continues in December, and I’m curious to see how it goes. The first issue of the series debuts TOMORROW, which is exciting. My enthusiasm for the book is based solely on the gorgeous covers we’ve seen so far, so hopefully the story is fun too.

Wonder Woman’s also popping up in a holiday special:

decholiday

DC REBIRTH HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1
Written by PAUL DINI, JAMES TYNION IV, STEVE ORLANDO, VITA AYALA, CULLEN BUNN, TIM SEELEY, JAMES ASMUS, HEATH CORSON, K. PERKINS and others
Art by ROBBI RODRIGUEZ, GUSTAVO DUARTE and others
Cover by DUSTIN NGUYEN
DC’s biggest and brightest heroes celebrate the holidays in this new special! Don’t miss a Chanukah crisis for Batwoman, a Flash family Christmas, Wonder Woman interrupting John Constantine’s hellblazing pagan party and more—including the return of Detective Chimp! Today’s top talents bring you a very special holiday gift that’ll keep on giving through the New Year! And writer Paul Dini crafts a Harley holiday tale featuring DCU guests that bridges all the stories in the weirdest, wildest way.
ONE-SHOT • On sale DECEMBER 14 • 96 pg, FC, $9.99 US • RATED T

I like holiday specials, and a story where Wonder Woman interrupts John Constantine’s pagan party sounds like a hoot. The price is a little steep on this one, but there are some great writers and artists in the mix that might make this book worth checking out.

Finally, the December solicits feature a couple of Wonder Woman action figures that will hit stores in April 2017. We’ve got one based on that DC Comics Bombshells line that will be $28 US; it looks like a lot of fun:

decbombshellfig

And another based on Ivan Reis’ design of Wonder Woman from his Justice League run for $45 US. Holy wow, that’s a lot:

deciconfig

It’s a lovely figure, but already out of date what with the new “Rebirth” costume. Figures take a long time to make, and they change Wonder Woman’s costume every other week it seems. Still, it’s very cool, albeit mad pricey.

Look for all of these comics this December, and the action figures this April!

Wonder Woman’s November 2016 Covers and Solicits

August 23, 2016

It looks like November is going to be a quieter month for Wonder Woman. The past few rounds of solicits have featured a variety of new collections of old Wonder Woman material, but either DC is taking a break this time or they’re waiting to see how those books do before continuing with more stuff. Either way, it’s just some floppy issues this November (apart from a trade paperback collection of Superman/Wonder Woman, but I’m doing my best to forget that that book ever existed).

So let’s see what Wonder Woman is up to in November 2016, starting with Wonder Woman #10 and #11:

novww10

WONDER WOMAN #10
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by NICOLA SCOTT
Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“YEAR ONE” part five! The world is finally introduced to the Wonder Woman, and adversaries—both ancient and new—take note. This story was previously scheduled to appear in issue #8.
On sale NOVEMBER 9 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

WONDER WOMAN #11
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by LIAM SHARP
Variant cover by JENNY FRISON
“THE LIES” part six! In the conclusion to this epic tale, the lie is revealed as Wonder Woman returns to Themyscira in the company of Steve Trevor to find that nothing has changed—and everything is wrong.
On sale NOVEMBER 23 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Nicola Scott gets the cover this month and it’s a gorgeous one as always. She really is doing phenomenal work with “Year One;” Scott’s always been a great artist, but this run is the best I’ve ever seen of her.

The solicit shows that Wonder Woman #10 contains the story originally solicited in Wonder Woman #8, so I went to DC’s page to see what’s up and #8 is now a “Year One Interlude” focusing on a younger Barbara Ann Minerva. Greg Rucka is still writing it, but the art will be done by Bilquis Evely. It seems that Scott might have gotten a bit behind and needed a fill in issue, which isn’t surprising. Her work is very detailed, and in past monthly books she’s usually been 3 on, 1 off. I like that they’re just doing a new one off story instead of getting a different artist to draw “Year One,” and Bilquis Evely is great and should be a lot of fun.

As for “The Lies,” the slow build thus far seems to because we don’t actually find out what the lies are until November? That is some decompressed storytelling. Maybe it should be called “The Lies, Eventually.” I mean, the Cheetah and Steve stuff is fine and all, but not what I thought I was getting. Hopefully we’ll get more hints at what the lies are in the coming months at least.

Wonder Woman’s also appearing in Trinity #3:

novtrinity3

TRINITY #3
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL
Art and cover by CLAY MANN
Variant cover by STEVE EPTING
“BETTER TOGETHER” part three! The deadly White Mercy has Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman in its terrifying grasp! But who would dare to orchestrate this attack—and why? All will be revealed as the three most powerful heroes in the DC Universe fight for their very souls!
On sale NOVEMBER 16 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Francis Manapul is taking the month off on art, but Clay Mann looks to be a solid replacement. That’s a fantastic cover, and the best I’ve seen Mann’s art ever look. I’m really excited for this book to start in September. It looks like it’s going to be gorgeous, and the story sounds like a fun team up.

Finally, Wonder Woman is appearing in the new Super Powers #1:

novsuperpowers1

SUPER POWERS #1
Written by ART BALTAZAR and FRANCO
Art and cover by ART BALTAZAR
Variant cover by FRANCO
Aw yeah, the World’s Greatest Heroes are back in a new, all-ages miniseries—except for Batman! Superman helps out by cleaning up in Gotham City, where he discovers a clue that sends Wonder Woman into space to find the Caped Crusader. Her journey brings her a step closer to Batman, but can she uncover the truth behind his disappearance? From the award-winning creative team that brought you TINY TITANS and SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES!
On sale NOVEMBER 23 • 32 pg, FC, 1 of 6, $2.99 US • RATED E

AW YEAH, Art Baltazar and Franco! Their team ups are always delightful. Plus I love that their books are great for young readers but also entertaining if you’re an adult. This mini-series should be a lot of fun, and it’s collected edition will be a great intro to the DC universe for kids, I’m sure. It’ll be under a lot of Christmas trees in 2017.

Look for all of these fun new comics this November!

Wonder Woman’s October 2016 Covers and Solicits

July 19, 2016

There’s some cool stuff on the way for Wonder Woman this October, from her regular bi-monthly series to a fun special to some intriguing collections. Between Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary and the upcoming film, the character’s profile is sky high and we’ve been getting a pretty nice selection of Wonder Woman products announced each month. It’s an exciting (and often expensive!) time to be a Wonder Woman fan.

So let’s see what Wonder Woman is up to in October, starting with her regular series:

octww9

WONDER WOMAN #9

On sale OCTOBER 26 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

As usual, we’re only getting one of the covers, and this month it’s the Sharp one. I don’t love it, to be honest. Is it just me, or does Steve sort of look like a creep here? He’s weirding me out a little.

But, in fun news, Frank Cho is no longer doing the variant covers, and in his place we’ve got Jenny Frison, which is a huge upgrade. Cho’s covers weren’t terrible, but Cho’s a twit who seems to love to stir up sexist anger among his followers, so I’m not sad to see him go. His brand wasn’t a good fit for the book. And Frison is an amazing cover artist, so this should be very cool!

As for the insides, Rucka sure does love vague solicits. Wonder Woman is set to meet the world for the first time in “Year One”, while in “The Lies” Wonder Woman is moving slightly closer to the truth. Not a lot of information, but the series has been solid so far so I’m looking forward to it all nonetheless.

Next up, the second issue of the gorgeous looking team up, Trinity:

TRINITY #2
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL • Art and cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL • Variant cover by FRANK CHO
“BETTER TOGETHER” part two! Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman have uncovered a window into their very souls: and the power of temptation proves to be stronger than any villain they could battle! The bonds of friendship and trust between the most formidable heroes on the planet will be tested to their breaking point, with the lives of innocents hanging in the balance!
On sale OCTOBER 19 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

I mean, look at that cover! I am going to buy this book based on the cover alone; it’s just so pretty. And Manapul’s doing the insides too! It’s going to look so nice. The story sounds weird in ways that could be cool. I like that the book focuses on their friendship and testing them all together; it’s a premise I can get behind. I’m keen for this book to start.

Hilariously, Frank Cho seems to have landed here with a new variant cover gig. We can’t catch a dang break! But really, who’s going to want a Cho cover when they can get that Manapul cover? It’s just too good.

We’ve also got an exciting special:

WONDER WOMAN 75TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1
Story and art by various • Cover by JIM LEE • Variant cover by NICOLA SCOTT • Variant cover by LIAM SHARP
An immense special issue celebrating seventy-five years of the Amazing Amazon, through phenomenal new stories, art, and stand-alone illustrations! Featuring a roster of incredible creators—some who’ve laid down legendary runs with the character, and some who’ve never drawn her before—including Rafael Albuquerque, Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, Renae De Liz, Brenden Fletcher, Adam Hughes, Karl Kerschl, Gail Simone, and many, many more to be announced!
On sale OCTOBER 26 • 80 pg, FC, $7.99 US • RATED T

Eighty pages of Wonder Woman fun, by some killer creative teams! I’m particularly excited for Fletcher and Kerschl to do a Wonder Woman story, though more Renae De Liz is super awesome, and Adam Hughes always does a great Diana. Plus Cliff Chiang! I love Cliff Chiang so much. I’m curious to see who else gets announced; it’d be great to see some more women in the mix here. I think this book could be a blast, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Now to some collections, including a fancy absolute edition:

ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN BY BRIAN AZZARELLO AND CLIFF CHIANG VOL. 1 HC
Written by BRIAN AZZARELLO
Art by CLIFF CHIANG, TONY AKINS, DAN GREEN and KANO
Cover by CLIFF CHIANG
In these tales from the start of DC—The New 52, Wonder Woman learns that Queen Hippolyta has kept a secret from her daughter all her life—and when Diana learns who her father is, her life will shatter like brittle clay. The only one more shocked than Diana by this revelation? Bloodthirsty Hera—so why is her sinister daughter, Strife, so eager for the truth to be told? This Absolute edition collects WONDER WOMAN #1-18 and #0.
On sale FEBRUARY 1 • 484 pg, FC, 8.25” x 12.5”, $125.00 US

I have mixed feelings on this. While the first six issues of this run are AMAZING, it does go downhill somewhat after that. I’d say that about 90% of my affection for this era of Wonder Woman is tied directly to Cliff Chiang’s spectacular art, and seeing it oversized like this would be so fun, but there were a lot of fill ins too that were often only just passable. I’m not sure whether I’ll pick this up or not, especially at such a steep price. But I might; I just love Chiang too much, you guys.

Finally, the collection we’ve all been waiting for:

THE LEGEND OF WONDER WOMAN HC
Written by RENAE DE LIZ
Art and cover by RENAE DE LIZ and RAY DILLON
The new WONDER WOMAN 9-issue miniseries written and pencilled by Renae De Liz is collected here! In the beginning there was only chaos. But Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, saw a better future—and eventually her daughter would be destined to bring that new world to life! Before her ultimate fate unfolds though, Diana of Themyscira must learn the important lessons of an Amazonian childhood!
On sale DECEMBER 7 • 288 pg, FC, $29.99 US

BEST OF WONDER WOMANS!! If for some reason you were crazy enough to not read this digitally and THEN not read this in single issues, pull yourself together and mark December 7, 2016, on your calendar because you need to get this book. It’s the best Wonder Woman story I’ve read in ages; it’s gorgeous and fun, and simultaneously classic and fresh. It’s just ridiculously good on every level. You’ve got to check it out, and if you’ve got the single issues already, get some of these for your friends. I mean, talk about a perfect holiday gift!

So October should be a lot of fun for single issues, and the collections that come out further down the road are looking cool too. Remember a few months back when all we got was the Finches on Wonder Woman and a terrible Superman/Wonder Woman series? We are living the high life now, gang!

Wonder Woman’s September 2016 Covers and Solicits

June 21, 2016

DC Comics’ solicits for September were released yesterday, and it looks like Wonder Woman’s got some fun adventures ahead of her, as well as a new series in which she co-stars. How lovely it is to be looking forward to all of the Wonder Woman comics coming out in a given month; it’s been so long since that’s been the case. So let’s see what Wonder Woman will be up to in September, starting with her eponymous series:

WONDER WOMAN #6
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by NICOLA SCOTT
Variant cover by FRANK CHO
“WONDER WOMAN YEAR ONE” part 3! Diana brings Steve back home, but the reception is not what either of them expected. Amid suspicion and a looming threat, the Patrons pay a visit, and new friendships are forged.
On sale SEPTEMBER 14 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

WONDER WOMAN #7
Written by GREG RUCKA
Art and cover by LIAM SHARP
Variant cover by TBD
“THE LIES” part 4! One god down—how many more to go? Diana takes another step closer to the truth, and Steve Trevor confronts his past!
On sale SEPTEMBER 28 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

The cover this month (we’re still only getting one of the two for some reason) is by Nicola Scott, and it’s fun to see Wonder Woman with her animal pals. Perhaps they’re planning an adorable prison escape? I’d be down for that. It sounds like the Amazons don’t love that Wonder Woman has brought Steve to their home, seeing as she’s in jail and all. But the world’s cutest jail break is on the way.

In the present, well, the solicit is very vague. It sounds like a bad time for the gods, since one of them is down and all, but we don’t know in what capacity they are down. Or if they’re even the real gods, I suppose. Everything is in question! Nothing is true! The gods sit on a throne of lies! It’s all very mysterious, but it should be a lot of fun.

Wonder Woman is co-starring in a new book, too:

TRINITY #1
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL
Art and cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL
Variant cover by TBD
“BETTER TOGETHER” part 1! Together again for the first time! Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. The core of the World’s Greatest Heroes…but with a new Man of Steel, the bonds these three share will be tested and redefined by super-star writer/artist Francis Manapul. In this premiere issue, see the trio travel from Metropolis to Gotham City and beyond to learn what forces launched their heroic careers. But how will this journey of discovery lead them to a new threat?
On sale SEPTEMBER 21 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Team up! It’s just like Batman v Superman, but hopefully not so terrible. With Francis Manapul at the helm, it could be pretty cool. It’ll be gorgeous for sure, at least. His art is always spectacular. Plus we’ve got the good Superman back now since the New 52 Superman is dead; I’m optimistic, and I’m going to have to check this one out. We’ve got another pretty vague solicit here, but “superheroes teaming up for an adventure” is something I can always get behind if it looks bright and fun.

Finally, we’ve got another Wonder Woman ’77 special, though no cover yet:

WONDER WOMAN ’77 SPECIAL #4
Written by MARC ANDREYKO, AMY CHU, TRINA ROBBINS and AMANDA DEIBERT
Art by TOM DERENICK, DARIO BRIZUELA, TESS FOWLER and CHRISTIAN DUCE
Cover by CAT STAGGS
After narrowly escaping Wonder Woman (and the law) once before, Gault (actually his disembodied brain!) plots revenge…and seeks a new body to house his evil! Plus, “Worlds Collide” when a tape full of government secrets gets swapped for some excellent Super Funk! We peek at “The Man Behind the Curtain” when a dictator tries to fulfill his daughter’s final wish. And in “Seeing Stars,” Wonder Woman proves herself not a just the protector of Earth…but of the universe.
On sale SEPTEMBER 21 • 80 pg, FC, $7.99 US RATED E • DIGITAL FIRST

Just look at this line up of creators! There are so many amazing people in the mix here, both writers and artists. It should be a fantastic issue. Plus with that last story, “Seeing Stars”, is Wonder Woman going to space? That would be rad. Lynda Carter in space sounds like an exciting time, and exactly what the series is for, i.e. cool things the show could never have afforded to do. Looking forward to this one.

Be sure to pick up all of these books in September! It looks like it’s going to be a great month for Wonder Woman.
