Women In Comics Statistics: DC, May 25, 2011

DC ended May with a quiet week of average stats, which you wouldn’t think is super exciting to write about but wait until you see the breakdown.  On May 25, 2011, DC Comics put out 13 new books with 145 credited creators, 129 male and 16 female.  Here are the overall percentages:

An 11% is pretty much spot on average for DC, and it looks like May is going to be a really good month for them altogether.  Which is nice to see, because their April was pretty terrible.  The relaunch may not be looking too good for women at DC down the road, but it’s been a solid few weeks in the present.  Let’s breakdown the stats:

And chart them up:

Can you believe it?  TWO female writers for 9.1%… that’s massive for DC.  And are you ready to have your mind blown?  NEITHER of them are Gail Simone!!  Though, not to be a letdown, neither are in the DC Universe proper either.  The writers are Talia Hershewe and Lauren Beukes, who both had stories in Vertigo’s Strange Adventures #1.  That book also accounts for the artist and inker (both Inaki Miranda), 3 of the 4 colourists, and 3 of the 4 editors.  Without Strange Adventures #1 this would have been a pretty awful week… and it was a one-shot, so don’t expect a second issue to swoop in and save a week next month too.  Anyway, it all adds up to an okay week… cover artists were a little low, but colourists were great, and editorial was at about their usual rates.  The chart looks way nicer than usual, though.  It’s nice to actually see some decent distribution at DC.

Notes

  • The busiest book of the week, by far, was Strange Adventures #1 with 37 creators.
  • Strange Adventures #1 was also the book with the most female creators, numerically, with 9.
  • However, in terms of percentage, Detective Comics #877 had the most female creators at 2 of 7.
