Women In Comics Statistics: DC, July 6, 2011

Seeing as I am far too keen a vacation planner, I don’t leave until tomorrow for my Dance with Dragons reading mini-vacation and everything is ready to go, so I decided to polish off the first July numbers.  On July 6, 2011, DC released 18 new comics with 153 credited creators, 136 men and 17 women.  Here are the percentages:

This is a pretty average number for DC… 11.1% is middle of the road for them.  It’s better than their June monthly total, so that’s nice because it’s good to start out a new month a little ahead of the previous one.  It breeds optimism… or maybe false hope, since DC tends to start a month well and then collapse towards the end.  Let’s look at the numbers by category:

And in chart form:

This was one of those annoying weeks were nearly everything sucked but strong editorial buoyed them up to an average-range total.  Cover artists, writers, and inkers all had just one female creator, while pencillers and letterers had none at all.  Colourists actually did decent, with a solid 15.8%, while assistant editors had a nice 33.3%, but the big category of the week was editors at 34.8%… that jump counteracted the bad creative categories a fair amount.  Ultimately, it was a decent week on the surface, but not so great when you looked underneath.

Notes

  • Flashpoint #3 had two female creators, Sandra Hope inking the cover and interiors and Kate Stewart assistant editing.  Amusingly, Fear Itself has a similar lady breakdown, with Laura Martin colouring the cover and interiors and Lauren Sankovitch assistant editing.  It’s almost like a mirror universe!!
  • The busiest book of the week was Looney Tunes #200 with 15 creators, 3 of them women.
  • Looney Tunes #200 had the most female creators numerically, but in terms of percentage the top book was iZombie #15 at 2 of 6.
